In 1977, thirty-four chamber musicians met in New York City to address the career challenges of the field and to discuss how to raise the nation's awareness of chamber music. They founded Chamber Music America, the only national service organization for the chamber music profession.
In twenty-nine years, CMA has grown to represent more than 8,000 individual and organization members. In addition to providing musicians with an array of professional development services and access to such benefits as affordable instrument insurance and health care plans, CMA supports the ensemble music field through a variety of grants, awards, and performance initiatives. To date, CMA has invested nearly $1 million in the professional development of chamber musicians and organizations.
CMA's signature residency program, founded in 1978, has launched more than 500 residencies nationwide. The commissioning program, begun in 1982, has fostered the composition and performance of nearly one hundred works. In 2000, CMA formalized its relationship with the jazz community by establishing the New Works: Creation and Presentation Program. Founded with the support of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the program has resulted in the creation of more than 80 new jazz works.
As CMA continues to grow, its membership has broadened to reflect the diversity of the ensemble music landscape in America today. United by shared professional values and common goals, CMA's members embrace musical styles ranging from Western classical and early music to new music, jazz, multimedia, and world genres and represent all facets of the chamber music world performers, presenters, educators, composers, music festivals and training programs, as well as music-related businesses and advocates of the art form.
