“In fact, improvisation is everywhere—but it’s very hard to see.” - George Lewis

Celebrate the release of Assemblage*, Dal Niente’s portrait album of the works of George Lewis, with a weekend of music, art, and conversation at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Known for his decades of work as an improviser, composer, scholar, trombonist, and computer musician, George draws inspiration for his notated compositions from philosophy, visual arts, and sociology as well as a wide range of musics; he creates a unique style to "generate a feeling of being far from equilibrium, encouraging listeners to do what we do best—stay in the moment and be ready for anything. On Thursday, members of Dal Niente improvise in galleries throughout the museum, culminating in a performance of George Lewis’ Artificial Life (2007), which calls for a large ensemble of improvising musicians, at the Modern Wing’s main hall of Griffin Court. On Friday at noon, George Lewis joins the Art Institute’s Jackie Terrasa for a free public gallery talk on the “assemblage” approach to art making in the work of artist Joseph Cornell. And on Sunday, September 24, Dal Niente performs Assemblage in its entirety at Fullerton Hall, with a pre-concert talk by George Lewis, philosopher Arnold Davidson, and writer John Corbett of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
