I'm very pleased to announce the world premier of Blood of the Air as part of the 32nd Annual San Francisco Jazz Festival. "Blood of the Air" is a new work sponsored by Chamber Music America's 2013 New Jazz Works: Commissioning and Ensemble Development program, with additional support from San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music.

Blood of the Air is based on the speech melodies and poetry of Beat-era surrealist poet Phillip Lamantia and will be performed by Sheldon Brown Ensemble, comprised of members two of my ongoing projects, Sheldon Brown Group and Distant Intervals. Lamantia's wild imagery sets the tone and his speech melodies provide melodic and rhythmic elements. While primarily instrumental, the work also features live readings of Lamantia's poetry, original source recordings of Lamantia, and reinterpretations of Lamantia's speech melodies by scat singer Lorin Benedict, who uses his own idiosyncratic "language". Blood of the Air  answers Surrealism's siren call of the "marvelous", the uncannily sublime.
