Description

Bassist, composer and bandleader Chris Lightcap has lent his huge sound, propulsive groove and creative vision to an impressively wide-ranging array of artists including Craig Taborn, Regina Carter, Tomasz Stanko, Julian Lage, Joe Morris, Nels Cline and Matt Wilson. His playing can be heard on over 70 albums, most recently on Taborn’s release on ECM records, “Daylight Ghosts” and Carter’s 2017 album on Sony, “Ella: Accentuate the Positive.” September 21st, Lightcap premiers new music with the debut of a new band, SuperBigmouth. A marriage of his two long running ensembles, Bigmouth and Superette, SuperBigmouth will return in November for a night at Roulette on Friday the 3rd.

The music he has written for SuperBigmouth consolidates his love and affinity for experimental composition and improvisation, West African music, classic rock, pop songwriting, production craft and the great jazz composers, performers and ensembles of the past century.

Bigmouth, made up of Taborn, Tony Malaby, Chris Cheek and Gerald Cleaver has performed and recorded with Lightcap for the past 15 years, and the group’s most recent CD, "Epicenter" was named one of the best CDs of 2015 by the New York Times, NPR, Downbeat, the LA times and many other outlets. The group has toured throughout the US and Europe, including festival appearances  at Willisau, Saalfeden, North Sea, Ljubljana and Earshot, among many others.

Assembled in 2013, Jonathan Goldberger, Curtis Hasselbring and Dan Rieser complete Superette, Lightcap’s electric experimental rock band. The group’s forthcoming self-titled debut album will be released in the spring of 2018 on Royal Potato Family and features special guests, guitarist Nels Cline and organist John Medeski.

“SuperBigmouth” was developed with support from Chamber Music America's 2016 New Jazz Works Commissioning and Ensemble Development program, funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
