This concert features the inimitable Yarn/Wire performing the world premiere of the complete Negotiation of Context cycle by leading Icelandic composer Davi∂ Brynjar Franzson. The pieces contained within explore the piano as a conversational partner, from the juxtaposition of the instrument with a pump organ (the mechanical inverse of a piano), through the pairing of two pianos with two bass drums (the most rudimentary relative of the piano), to the choreographed interaction between a pianist playing traditionally, and another who manipulates the strings that the first puts in motion. A deep listening experience, the piece explores how a sound can be heard simply in and of itself, or as a part of something else when placed in a context, and how that context influences how we understand the sound. Together, sound and context simulate a musical surface. The performance also includes the haunting new piece Solus by Turkish composer Cenk Ergün.
Yarn/Wire is a quartet of two percussionists and two pianists. Founded in 2005, the ensemble is admired for the energy and precision they bring to vital performances of today’s most adventurous music. The results of Yarn/Wire’s collaborative initiatives point towards the emergence of a new and lasting repertoire, and partnerships with genre-bending artists such as Pete Swanson, The Theatre of a Two-Headed Calf, and Tristan Perich have led to the creation of work that is “spare and strange and very, very new.” (Time Out NY)

An accomplished and adventurous flutist, Amelia’s recent projects include performances at Carnegie’s Zankel and Weill Halls, the Stone, Bargemusic, Le Poisson Rouge, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Orford Sound Art Festival, and premieres of works by Columbia University Composers at Lincoln Center. Amelia has appeared with such orchestras as the London Sinfonietta and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In addition to producing chamber music concerts throughout New York City, she is a Promotion Associate for music publisher G. Schirmer, representing their chamber and dance music catalogues. Amelia holds a Master’s degree in Contemporary Flute Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, and a Bachelor’s degree from the Royal Academy of Music in London, England where she won three prizes for musical excellence.
