The CCM brass players perform a double-bill of jubilant and heavenly music by two contemporary composers. The Trumpets at Jericho, a CCM commission, portrays the infamous event in which
trumpeters “circle the walls of Jericho seven times and triumphantly bring down the walls amidst trumpet blasts” (Stacy Garrop). The Celestial Suite for brass quintet brings out the energy and fire of CCM’s own distinctive brass sound as it builds to a transcendent finish. Celebrated oboist Alex Klein joins CCM in two Mozart works. The charming Divertimento is lighthearted, lovely, and skillfully written. The dramatic Serenade, the only one in a minor key, employs pairs of oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and horns in an atypical “indoor” serenade.
