The life of longtime Juilliard faculty member Herbert Stessin is commemorated with a concert of 4-hand piano music by his former students, friends, and colleagues. On April 20, 4:00 PM at Bargemusic (1 Water St, Brooklyn, NY) pianists Orli Shaham, Jonathan Feldman, Rita Sloan, and Sakiko Ohashi, celebrate the life of the influential teacher who taught at Juilliard for over 50 yeas. Mr. Stessin passed away in 2011 at the age of 88. He was a consummate pianist and teacher who was unswervingly protective and unstintingly demanding of his students.
The concert, which is part of Bargemusic's "Masterworks" series, includes Mozart's Piano Sonata in D Major for 4 hands, Schumann's Bilder aus Osten suite, Barber's Souvenirs, Faure's Dolly Suite, selections from Brahms's Hungarian Dances, and more. "This program has been in the making ever since Herbert's passing," says Shaham. "The pieces we selected are ones we know he would have loved to hear. It's as if we're playing a concert just for him."
Schumann: Bilder aus Osten (Pictures from the East) for 4 hands (selections)
Barber: Souvenirs, suite for piano 4 hands, Op. 28
Faure: Dolly Suite for 4 hands (selections)
Plus works for 6 and 8 hands!
