Program
This concert focuses on instrumental music by Eric Lyon, with an emphasis on his “articulated noise” compositions. These works employ predominantly random decisions affecting high-level musical organization and content choices, with compositional discretion primarily reserved for surface-level details. This music surfs contingency and celebrates the increasing prominence of noise in our daily lives.

Eric Lyon is a composer pursuing a long-term research engagement with the effects of digital technology on music creation. He began composing computer music in 1983, working with Paul Lansky at Princeton. Further computer music studies were pursued during Masters work at the Eastman School of Music, with Alan Schindler. DSP and coding studies were undertaken at UC San Diego with Mark Dolson, Gareth Loy, and F. R. Moore. Since receiving his PhD from UCSD in 1991, Lyon has taught computer music at Keio University SFC, The Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences, Dartmouth College, Manchester University, Queen’s University Belfast, and most recently at Virginia Tech.
