Aaron Copland described the dance style of Martha Graham, his choreographer and collaborator on the ballet Appalachian Spring, as “seemingly but only seemingly simple.” The same can be said of Copland’s exquisite music for the ballet, as well as of his vision of America. Though the piece has become virtually synonymous with heartland America, it emerged from the imagination and cultural experience of a Brooklyn Jew. Join Rob Kapilow and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada as we explore the “seemingly but only seemingly simple” world of Appalachian Spring.
