Saxophonist-Composer’s New CD as He Performs with Quintet Later This Month
NEW YORK (July 23, 2012)—Yosvany Terry, the acclaimed Afro-Cuban jazz saxophonist-composer, performs one free concerts at City College on July 23. This performance is a part of Jazzmobile’s Summerfest, the city’s oldest, continuous jazz summer festival. The musician will perform works from his latest CD Today’s Opinion (Criss Cross)with the Yosvany Terry Quintet.
Terry hails from Cuba, where he was trained classically at the prestigious National School of Arts (ENA) and Amadeo Roldan Conservatory in Havana, as well as under his father Eladio“Don Pancho” Terry, renowned violinist and chekeré player. He came to New York City in 1999 and immersed himself in its jazz scene, performing with the likes of Jesus "Chucho" Valdes, Avishai Cohen, Roy Hardgrove, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Meshell Ndegeocello, Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Wycliffe Gordon, Steve Coleman and Dave Douglas. He’s gone on to play stages around the world with some of the top names in the business. Latin Jazz Percussion Magazinesaid that, “Mr. Terry’s performances always, appeal to audiences, uniquely blending Afro-Cuban music with Jazz structures and harmonies, and creating and organic, natural flow that swings and is proven to be intellectually challenging.”
At the upcoming performance the altoist and master chekére player will be joined by Obed Calvaire (drums), Jonathan Finlayson (trumpet), Osmany Paredes (piano) and his brother Yunior Terry (bass). The group’s City College performance in Jazzmobile’s Summerfest will take place on Monday, July 23 at 7:00 pm at the North Academic Center (NAC) Plaza (Amsterdam Avenue near 136th Street).
