Join us Sunday evening for the finale of the conference, when CMA honors the legendary Juilliard String Quartet with the 2008 Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award, in recognition of the quartet's artistry, dedication, and leadership in chamber music. Joseph W. Polisi, President of The Juilliard School, will speak.

Founded in 1946 at the urging of violinist Robert Mann and composer William Schuman (then the newly appointed president of the Juilliard School), the Juilliard String Quartet made its debut at its namesake school on October 11 of that year. One of the very few postwar chamber music groups that did not trace its origins to Europe, the young quartet set a high standard for chamber music in the United States, soon making history with the American premiere of the six Bartók string quartets as a cycle. With remarkably few personnel changes in its long lifetime, the quartet has performed more than 500 works in the United States and abroad, mentored innumerable young chamber musicians, and premiered the compositions of more than 60 American composers. As critic Mark Swed wrote in 1996, "The Juilliard String Quartet is America's quartet."

Chamber Music America's National Service Award, named in recognition of the outstanding leadership of former CMA board chairman Richard J. Bogomolny, is the organization's highest honor and is awarded annually. Recent recipients include the Kronos Quartet, pianist Billy Taylor, presenter Ruth A. Felt, and the Guarneri String Quartet.

Both current and former members of the Juilliard String Quartet will be present to receive the award.

Banquet tickets are limited and available only by advance purchase. Please order when registering for the conference.
