Realities of Artist/Manager/Presenter Relationships
With Marc Baylin, president, Baylin Artists Management
What does an ensemble need to know about how presenters choose artists and put together a series? How much--or how little--direction should a group give its manager, if it has one? And if self-managed, how does the ensemble attract the attention of a presenter and cultivate a relationship? Mr. Baylin will speak about the business of music from the three vantage points--artist, manager and presenter--and offer insights into the roles played by each.
Marc Baylin has more than 20 years' experience in artist management, presenting, and special events. He has acted as facilitator on major commissioning projects involving presenters (the Library of Congress, Hancher Auditorium, the Lied Center of Kansas), composers (Michael Daugherty, Anthony Davis, Joe Lovano, Mike Reid, and Julia Wolfe) and ensembles (Turtle Island Quartet, Ethos Percussion Group and the Bang on a Can All-Stars). The project with the Lied Center and Turtle Island Quartet yielded a 2006 Grammy.
Baylin Artists Management is a multi-disciplinary agency. Its roster includes Bang on a Can, ETHEL, Turtle Island Quartet, Christopher O'Riley, the Hot 8 Brass Band and others as well as dance and theater companies. Among his recent clients are the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, Dance Alloy, the Institute for Cultural Partnerships, and Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour
