District5 is an energetic and daring wind quintet based in Washington DC that specializes in new music and new transcriptions. They are recipients of a 2016 CMA Classical Commissioning Grant with composer Evis Sammoutis and will premiere this exciting new work in Feb 2018. District5 has recently performed at the U.S. Department of State, Chesapeake Chamber Music Festival, Barns at Wolf Trap, and Washington Arts Club. They gave the U.S. premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's ROTARY Woodwind Quintet in 2014. Upcoming projects include: the release of their first album, the complete Chopin preludes transcribed by David Plylar; a residency at Ithaca College; and a collaboration with the Embassy of Cyprus to showcase the music of Evis Sammoutis.

We've received the completed score of our 2016 CMA commission from Evis Sammoutis! Look for the world premiere in DC. 2/11/18. This commission has been made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, with generous funding provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund

We are aiming for early 2018 for the release of our Chopin Preludes album and music videos.

This season you can hear us perform brand new wind quintet arrangements: Beethoven's Piano Sonata #26 "Les Adieux", transcribed by our own bassoonist, Eddie Rumzis, and Liszt's Consolations, transcribed by David Plylar

We enjoyed a very open, curious, + experimental workshop with Evis Sammoutis earlier this Fall, where we dove immediately into multiphonics, limitations, + blending possibilities. The highlight was a trip to Home Depot, where the clarinet mouthpiece had the most success with getting sounds out of PVC pipes!
