A 1983 NEA grant facilitated the premiere of 'New Yor-Uba, A Musical Celebration of Cuba in America' at Joseph Papp’s Public Theater / NYC. Comprised of brass, saxophones, a rhythm section, 3 bata/conga drummers & traditional vocals, the ensemble presents Rosewoman's original compositions utlizing Yoruba, Dahomey and Abakwa folkloric elements. Saluting the Orishas (Yoruban deities) in a contemporary jazz setting, Rosewoman continues to enhance the ensemble's repertoire with new music & personnel. The ensemble's mission is to honor the legacy of Cuban folkloric traditions while simultaneously innovating the sound & exploring the links between these profound musical traditions. New Yor-Uba has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe.
