The Steve Griggs Ensemble specializes in site-specific work emphasizing social justice. The group won the ASCAP/CMA Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music in 2013 and 2015. Their repertoire includes "Panama Hotel Jazz" about Japanese American incarceration during WWII, "Listen to Seattle" about the lack of federal recognition for the Duwamish tribe, "A Cup of Joe Brazil" about institutional racism against jazz, and "Sound in Stone" about creative freedom. Commissions and support come from regional and national organizations.

The Ensemble was selected for the Playback Program by the Seattle Public Library to stream local music. They were also nominated for NW Acoustic Jazz Ensemble of the Year by Earshot Jazz. Arts in the Parks will fund 6 free concerts in Pratt Park. Jack Straw Studios awarded a residency to record Sound in Stone.

The City of Seattle Office of Arts and Culture has awarded the Steve Griggs Ensemble a CityArtist grant to create a new program of stories and music inspired by the August 30, 2010 killing of native carver John T. Williams by Seattle police officer Ian Birk. The program will premiere on the 2017 anniversary of the death.

4Culture will join the National Park Service and City of Seattle in funding the Panama Hotel Jazz Performance Extension. This program brings Panama Hotel Jazz to the Panama Hotel Tea Room every 2nd Saturday of the month until August 2016.
