Writing for the Magazine
Most of the articles in Chamber Music magazine are assigned by the editor to professional writers, but we are also open to receiving unsolicited story ideas and manuscripts on topics relating to chamber music, to the arts in general, and to nonmusical issues that relate to musicians' lives. Rather than writing a full story, please submit a written query (one page maximum) to the editor. Include a summary of the topic, your qualifications to write about it, a rough outline, the specifics you would emphasize, and some examples of previous writing. Send story queries to egoldensohn@chamber-music.org or by mail to Editor, Chamber Music magazine, 305 Seventh Avenue, New York NY 10001.
Because Chamber Music is bi-monthly, we must receive stories and story ideas at least four months in advance of publication. In other words, if you want to write something about an event that will occur in October, we really should hear from you no later than June, and probably before that. Deadlines for completed manuscripts are two and one half months before the magazine's publication date.
Book Reviews
The book review essay ("Cover to Cover") appears five times a year. We welcome desk copies of new books for evaluation and suggestions of new books to review. Send your ideas to egoldensohn@chamber-music.org or by mail to Editor, Chamber Music magazine, 305 Seventh Avenue, New York NY 10001.
CD Reviews
Announcements of members' new CDs can be posted on the Members' area of this this website by clicking here.
Chamber Music does not review CDs, but we do have a column ("High Fidelity," by James M. Keller) that addresses recorded music by topic. (Recent subjects include essays on chamber music by Spanish composers, a comparison of various new recordings of Haydn's Seven Last Words, recent recordings of works by composers who were also conductors, etc.).
Please send CDs to Editor, Chamber Music magazine at 305 Seventh Avenue, New York NY 10001.
Unsolicited Manuscripts
It is always better to query the editor (see "Writing for the Magazine," above) about a story idea before expending energy in writing; but if you already have an article written, we would be happy to evaluate its suitability for publication. Send manuscripts to Editor, Chamber Music magazine, 305 Seventh Avenue, New York NY 10001. (Note: We do not return submitted materials unless they are accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.)
"American Ensemble"
This section in the front of the magazine highlights the activities of CMA member ensembles and presenters. Of the 8,000-plus members, only five to ten groups/presenters can be featured per issue. To keep us apprised of your activities, however, send us press releases and press kits and alert us to any unusually newsworthy activities or events. Send press releases to egoldensohn@chamber-music.org or by mail to Editor, Chamber Music magazine, 305 Seventh Avenue, New York NY 10001.
If you are submitting photos by e-mail, please make sure they are "high-resolution," that is, 300 dpi or pixels per inch, and at least 4 inches width or length.
Getting Listed in Directories
Having an up-to-date listing in the Directory of Summer Festivals, Schools, and Workshops (Mar/Apr issue) or the annual Membership Directory is automatic if you are a member.
Remember to keep your listings up to date with the Membership Department by responding to requests for updates and sending us any changes of contact information, addresses, activities, etc., by contacting membership@chamber-music.org or by faxing Membership at (212) 242-7955.
