Is the word "classical" a turn-off?
The non-profit presenter for which I volunteer recently had some feedback to the effect that the term "classical music" may be a turn-off for younger people, including serious music students. We've heard that some young people think a description such as "quality music" conveys a genre that's less stuffy and more contemporary. But we've also been told that other young people don't think "quality" is an appropriate description.
Have others heard anything similar? And has anyone heard any good alternatives to "classical" or "quality" to help attract new audience members and donors?
