Chamber music saving symphonic music
As an African-American member of a major symphony orchestra, I thought it was a shame that more younger people and people of color didn't come to our concerts. I decided to create opportunities to bring symphonic music to them after successfully arranging Peter and the Wolf for The Soldier's Tale ensemble plus flute in 1995. Stravinsky had the right idea for a mini-orchestra (although he was thinking more jazz band) when times were tough in 1917.
Since that beginning I transcribed over a hundred famous titles for the eight instruments and have a long list of more. But the ultimate goal is to use the intimacy of chamber music to demonstrate, demystify and even warm up symphonic music for curious music lovers who avoid symphony concerts... for whatever reasons.
