Description
Join us for California Adelante – a three-part virtual discussion series with a diverse California native Latino composers, hosted by Armando Castellano, Music Director of Quinteto Latino wind ensemble and Founder/Director of the Latino Music Education Network. Composers will share tell their stories of living and working in California and their experiences as people of color navigating the world of classical music.

In our first webinar, we are thrilled to speak with composer Gabriela Lena Frank. She currently serves as Composer-in-Residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra and is included in the Washington Post's list of the 35 most significant women composers in history (August, 2017). Identity has always been at the center of composer/pianist Gabriela Lena Frank's music.

Born in Berkeley, California (September, 1972), to a mother of mixed Peruvian/Chinese ancestry and a father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent, Gabriela explores her multicultural heritage through her compositions. Inspired by the works of Bela Bartók and Alberto Ginastera, Gabriela has traveled extensively throughout South America in creative exploration. Her music reflects her own experience as a multi-racial Latina, along with her studies of Latin American culture. She incorporates poetry, mythology, and native musical styles into a western classical framework that is uniquely her own.

This project is part of Latino Music Education Network’s advocacy for race equity, diversity, and inclusion of classical Latino musicians and composers. Eurocentrism has dominated classical music and excluded musicians and composers of color. We hope that deeper conversations like this will create long-lasting change in the field, as well as contribute to a broader community definition of Latino music.

This project was made possible with support from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Visit www.calhum.org.
