Description

The Robert Mann Chamber Music Series continues with a performance by the Juilliard String Quartet, of which Mann was the founding first violinist, and which The Boston Globe has called “the most important American quartet in history.” The ensemble performs two major works by French composers: Ravel’s only string quartet, a lively masterpiece and one of the composer’s first successes, as well as Dutilleux’s “Ainsi la Nuit,” a modern classic commissioned for the Juilliard Quartet. The program concludes with Dvořák’s popular “American” Quartet, influenced by folk tunes, spirituals, and even bird songs that Dvořák encountered in New York City and in the Czech community of Spillville, Iowa.
